- Dan has entered the Texas SandFest for the past four years and won Sculptor's Choice in 1999 and in 2000 he really cleaned up, winning First Place, Sculptor's Choice, and People's Choice with his Eve sculpture "Just Say No." Last year (2001) Dan won Fourth Place and Sculptor’s Choice here with “Captured Angel” an impressive and powerful sculpture. - Won First Place in the World Solo Competition, Canada, in 1996; won First Place at North American Sand sculpting Championship at Virginia Beach 1998; won First Place and People’s Choice here in Port Aransas in 1999 for “The Storyteller.” In 2000, he won second place with “Catch Of The Day.“ This is Damon’s third year here at SandFest. Damon has won or placed in every major sand contest in North America. Damon is a commercial artist and lives in Versailes, Kentucky, with his wife, Beth. Beth is also a Sand Sculptor. - Alfred has won and placed in several Texas competitions, and South Padre Island. While he lives in San Antonio, he spends almost every other weekend on a local beach here on the island carving anything from dolphins & mermaids to basketball players. Alfred won second place at the C101 contest at JP Luby Park, Corpus Christi (1999). This is Alfred’s sixth time at Texas SandFest. Alfred is a contractor by profession and also carves in plaster. Artist: Karen Fralich Sandcastle Days, South Padre Island Texas: (2000) Second Place, (2001) Second Place Which makes her only the 2nd woman to ever place in the World Competition Solo event! This is Karen’s second time to compete at the Texas SandFest. Last year she did a delightful sculpture (Hide-N-Seek) with a dragon and an adorable fairy, playing hide and seek. The crowds loved it! - John is a captain with the Atlantic City Fire Department, however his true interest is in the visual arts. He paints portraits and nature scenes and sculpts both sand and stone. He has competed at the professional level in sand sculpture competitions throughout the world since 1990, winning many national and international titles: International Champion Jesolo, Italy; American Champion Fort Myers, Florida; World Champion by People’s Choice in Canada; and in 2001 alone, he has won Second Place and People’s Choice at the World Championship Doubles, Fourth Place at Hampton Beach Master’s Competition, Third Place at the American Sandsculpting Festival, First Place at the Quebec ExpoCite Competition, tied for First Place in Jesolo, Italy, Second Peoples Choice at Sand Castle Days on South Padre Island, Texas. His work has been published in many periodicals and newspapers. It has been featured on the Discovery Channel, the QVC Shopping Channel CNBC, Martha Stewart Show, and the Travel Channel. He is currently writing a book on the subject of sand sculpture entitled “No Hassles Just Castles.” Web site: www.jgowdy.com Elliott has been carving sand for about eight years. He has been an active part of the Hard Sand Cafe sculpting team. They have placed at the World Championship in Harrison Hot Springs, British Colombia, five of those seven years. Elliott also participated in six solo contests and has worked commercially with Sandscapes in addition to working on his own. This is Elliott’s second time at Texas SandFest. Elliott, like most sand sculptors, feels that win or lose,
he wins personally, each time he participates. Amazin has been invited to the World Competition, British Columbia, six times and won Third Place in the Solo division, in 2001 he won Best Architecture in the Doubles Competition; won Second Place in Virginia Beach; won First Place in Ft. Myers Beach, American Solo Championship contest in 1992 and won Second Place and People‘s Choice in 2000. He has built sandcastles in nine different states and three foreign countries. His work has been in Self magazine, Crayola Kids magazine, and he did a commercial project for 1800callcollect and Best Buy. 1st place Texas SandFest, Port Aransas, Texas 2001 Kirk is known for his dramatic, unique "mechanical fantasies.” This will be Kirk’s fourth year at Texas SandFest. Last year he won First Place for his creation called “Swiss Army Castle.” This intricately carved “knife” was a parity of the Swiss Army Knife but this one opened (magically enough) into a castle. It was highly detailed and quite a crowd pleaser. Artist: Jay Stephens
- Jay started sand sculpting in 1992 and has won contests in Biloxi, Mississippi and South Padre Island, Texas. In 1998 and 1999, he placed First in So. Padre Island’s Sandcastle Days, Texas State Championship. Jay has competed in the Texas SandFest, here in Port Aransas, every year since 1999. This is Jay’s fourth time at Texas SandFest. Last year his sculpture of “Hog Heaven” had a detailed Harley and several pigs complete with motorcycle “leather” jackets which delighted the crowds. - Dave has won contests in Texas, Florida, South Carolina and Indiana. Dave started building with sand as a child and never stopped. Now, forty years later, he still plays and experiments with sand sculptures on the beach near his home. Dave specializes in creating big, clean, flowing arches that seem to defy gravity.
